Alice Johnson.

The 14-year-old taekwondo player, from Kilburn and a student at John Flamsteed Community School, Denby, is a member of the Heart of England Club, winning bronze medals at the English Championships is sparring and high kicks and a gold in sparring at the GTI British Open.

Alice says: "My sport is ITF taekwondo, which I began in 2011. I started training at Ripley Leisure Centre with a class that class is part of a group of 30 clubs throughout the Midlands. I have since competed in over 40 competitions throughout the UK and Ireland, winning many medals and trophies.

"In 2012, I was invited to train with the Heart of England Elite squad. I train up to seven hours a week which includes training at my club, HoE squad, black-belt and with the elites.

"I compete in local, national and international competitions against the best girls from ours and other clubs. This is challenging, but I enjoy competing and look forward to every competition.

"The coaching I receive from Master Bradshaw and his team is excellent. I am now normally in the black-belt under-18 girls category and in the past year I think I have made a good start winning gold three times in sparring, once in patterns and once for special techniques, and have achieved several second and third places.

"My short-term goal is to train hard and take each competition as it comes and focus on performing well. My long-term goal is to be selected for the team competing in the 2017 World Championships to be held in Argentina. There is tough competition for places and the team will be selected on performances and results over the next 18 months.

"My ICON bursary will help me with my travel, accommodation and equipment costs."
