Ilana Freestone

Ilana Freestone

Director (job share)

Derbyshire Sport

Ilana doesn't naturally talk about herself or her achievements, but quietly 'achieves' in pretty much anything she turns her hand to. Keen to participate in any sporting activity on offer, in the past Ilana has turned her hand to netball, trampolining, sailing and a range of outdoor activities.

Also an ex volleyball player and coach, today Ilana enjoys running, skiing and walking with her very cute dog, and two sporty children. That said, the standard of play at last summer's lunchtime staff volleyball sessions improved dramatically, following some gentle 'coaching' from Ilana!

Ilana came to Derbyshire Sport following a 12 year career at Sport England where she undertook a variety of roles both nationally and regionally.

She is keen for Derbyshire Sport to make a difference and is ambitious for our future as one of the most active and successful sporting counties in England.

Margaret Blount

Margaret Blount

Deputy Director

Derbyshire Sport

Margaret has spent many a day as a 'taxi driver' for her cyclist daughters, and, with a husband who's also keen to get in the saddle, it's a good job she's grown to like it as her favourite sport otherwise 'she would be an outcast, or go mad'.

As such, her top sportsman is Olympic track cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy - 'he's achieved so much and seems like a really nice bloke too' - but she does physical activity rather than sport because the latter 'generally ends up with me getting hurt.'

"Mounting biking at Cannock Chase with clip in pedals for the first (and only) time was memorable," she says. "I fell off the bike at least seven times. Never again. I love driving, but my family think I am rubbish at it." Much safer are her hobbies of going to 'nice' coffee shops and the cinema.

Margaret was working for Sport England East Midlands office at the time that County Sport Partnerships were beginning to be actively supported by Sport England and joined Derbyshire Sport when a relevant post came up.

Paul Chambers

Paul Chambers

Sport Development Manager

Derbyshire Sport

Paul had a background in electrical engineering before changing career, going to Loughborough University and then being a facility manager in Derby. He wanted to make a difference to sport across the county, not just in his locality, hence his move to Derbyshire Sport where he leads strategically on all things facility-related, including successfully bringing the Derby Arena, with its spectacular velodrome, to the city.

With a passion for all things cycling - 'I like doing it and watching it' - it's no surprise that he names multi-medalling Olympian and 2012 Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins as his favourite sporting personality because of 'his successes across different disciplines and his quirky character'. Paul is accreditted to ride on the velodrome, trains there every week and is hoping to compete in Masters Championships in the 2k individual pursuit.

Paul also has a keen interest in skiing, XC skiing, athletics, swimming and weight training - meaning he always places well on the Derbyshire Workplace Challange - and enjoys going on 'nice active holidays.'

Andrea Stone

Andrea Stone

Sport Development Manager

Derbyshire Sport

"What I love about sport, is what it can do for people, whether it be provide a competitive opportunity, help people make friends, improve health and well-being or simply provide a fun activity for someone to take part in," says Andrea.

That's why she applied to work for Derbyshire Sport, initially as a Coach and Volunteer Development Officer, at 'exciting time' when it had just undergone a review and was almost starting afresh as an organisation.

An inspiration to her is marathon runner Steve Way - ' to wake up one day and think enough is enough (he was over-weight, drinking and smoking too much), and to go on and not only do something about it, but to represent your country at a Commonwealth Games, is a huge achievement'.

Andrea has has fond memories of scuba diving with huge rays in Egypt, has tried her hand at windsurfing in Australia and jogged with her mum to help her complete a 10k. She also teaches Zumba and Body Tone and loves to take her two daughters to the park and swimming at the weekend.

Craig Homer

Craig Homer

Sport Development Manager

Derbyshire Sport

Formula One fan and Sheffield Wednesday supporter Craig lists Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill and Lewis Hamilton among his sporting heroes, along with Chris Waddle, as 'for two years in the early 90s, half of Sheffield walked in a 'Waddle wonderland' through watching his trickery and step over'!

At the age of eight he had a major accident on his new motor-cross bike, whilst racing at Butts quarry in Ashover. Falling on his head, he wrote off his helmet but survived unmarked, unscathed and with no repercussions… 'although some may say otherwise'.

Craig is passionate that sport 'should be a statutory right for all, especially Children and Young People'. He adds: "I want to help shape and develop opportunities for all young people to be active and achieve their personal best."

He can 'just about play the guitar' and says, mysteriously, he has performed live in New York City in the year 2000.

James Cook

James Cook

Sport Development Manager

Derbyshire Sport

It's not particularly unusual that James' favourite sport is football - where he's a lifelong Sheffield United fan. What is more offbeat is choosing between Adebayo Akinfenwa and Paul Devlin as his favourite exponents of the beautiful game.

AFC Wimbledon striker Akinfenwa – AKA the beast - 'doesn't look like he should be a professional footballer, but he uses his size and been scoring goals for over 10 years', while Devlin 'was my idol growing up as a no-nonsense winger'.

James has played semi-professionally for a number of local sides. He says: "I once played in a cup final where the second half was delayed for over 15 minutes due to our changing room door getting jammed. Thankfully the opposition's assistant manager was able to force the lock. Having been 1-0 down at half time, we went on to win 2-1, with the opposition insisting we had jammed the door on purpose to 'upset their rhythm'. The finger was pointed at me as I was the one who closed the door."

James was working in Cambridgeshire when he saw the opportunity to join Derbyshire Sport. Thankfully he doesn't have to worry about his fear of heights as the office is on the ground floor...

Rachael Dyer

Rachael Dyer

Sport Development Officer

Derbyshire Sport

Rachael was devastated to hear of the death of legendary commentator Richie Benaud because she's a cricket aficianado whose played and watched the game since childhood - "What's better than an evening T20 game with a glass of Pimms?!"

She joined Derbyshire Sport through a desire to work across various sports and activity to have an impact on increasing participation and the health and wellbeing of everyone.

She loves to listen to spinner-turned-pundit Graeme Swann on Test Match Special - 'he's a legend, best English spinner of all time and the funniest to listen to' - and never lets her dad forget it if she beats him at a round of golf.

Another interest is travelling the world and exploring new places - which has taken her to Botswana to help the Cricket Without Boundaries charity raise HIV/AIDS awareness. But just don't ask her to do a backwards roll - 'gym was never my strong point at school'.

Edwina Archer

Edwina Archer

Funding Officer

Derbyshire Sport

With a background in grant funding, and after having worked for two funding organisations within the county, Edwina took on her role at Derbyshire Sport because she felt it would be an interesting challenge from an alternative perspective.

She says: "I haven't been wrong! The variety of the role and meeting many of the volunteers who work so hard for their sport and their communities have been two of the best things about my job."

Edwina fell in love with tennis as a teenager after getting Wimbledon tickets at school back in the days of McEnroe, Connors and Borg. However, she insists she is not the greatest player.

Having been hit by footballs, hockey balls, and once by a golf club, Edwina is much happier to 'watch sport from a safe distance' these days, but does plenty of countryside walking, volunteers in her home town of Chesterfield, works part-time at a Nottingham auction house and has a penchant for architecture, having been raised in the 'beautiful' Lincolnshire town of Stamford.

Key Work Areas

  • Writing funding applications which focus on sport and / or active recreation in Derby / Derbyshire.
  • Providing funding advice and feeding back on draft applications written by clubs, groups, schools and other organisations.
  • Circulating funding updates.

Rachel Felix

Rachel Felix

Marketing Officer

Derbyshire Sport

Sporting talent runs in Rachel's family with her brother Richard, running internationally and she has competed herself both in athletics and badminton and even a broken arm playing rounders in her formative years at school didn't put her off.

As such, her current position was an ideal career move. "I was already working in the sport sector in Leeds, but needed a new challenge," she says. "This position came up and seemed a perfect opportunity to work in sport in my home county."

Rachel respects Roger Federer - 'an awesome tennis player and a gentleman on and off court' - and away from sport likes walking in the Peak District, carrying out home improvements and doing enough exercise to stay fit.

Another interest involves bricks and mortar, with a thirst for watching property development programmes, which she would 'like to do herself' in the future.

Katie Crockett

Marketing Officer

Derbyshire Sport

Katie has recently joined the Derbyshire Sport team, having moved back to Derbyshire from the south. Her background is in event management and tourism and was interested in the opportunity to work within sport at a local level and helping to get more people more active, a goal she tries to reach herself.

She enjoys yoga and swimming but since having her two children finds that most of her exercise comes from running around play centres and long walks in some of Derbyshire's many scenic locations.

Nikki Sargeson

Nikki Sargeson

Marketing and Communications Assistant

Derbyshire Sport

Nikki joined Derbyshire Sport in 2007, as working for a sporting organisation ahead of the London 2012 Games appealed, and she says 'it has not disappointed'. She is very proud of Derbyshire, having lived in Chesterfield for almost all of her life, and all of the sporting talent that the area has.

Thanks to Jog Derbyshire she has managed to run several 10k races, and since becoming a mum in 2014 has swapped running for buggy walks and parent and baby sessions in the pool! Nikki also enjoys watching a variety of sports when she can, everything from athletics to snooker, and perhaps more unusually is also a baseball fan, supporting the New York Yankees.

'I'm not competitive at all, and shy away from team sports, ' she says. 'But I think there is a sport or activity out there for everyone and enjoy hearing stories about how sport has made a positive impact to a person's life. It's not just about keeping fit, going to an exercise class or jogging group is a great way to meet people and I love the social element of it all.'

When she is not working or running around after her daughter, Nikki can usually be found shopping or going out for tea and cake – the perfect treat after burning all those calories!

Christine Gregory

Christine Gregory

Partnership Administrator

Derbyshire Sport

Christine saw working for Derbyshire Sport as an opportunity for her to demonstrate her skills within a progressive and interesting partnership in what was a 'challenging position' within a then-new organisation.

Swimming and aqua jog - 'all-round exercise' - are her favourite leisure pursuit and she is another office 'petrolhead'. I am drawn to watching and following Formula 1 through my husband's interest and passion and would be a Formula 1 widow if I didn't," she says. "But I do secretly like Lewis Hamilton and the excitement of the races."

Away from work, Christine enjoys sewing, card-making and creative crafts as well as caravanning and walking 'with our energetic dog that needs plenty of exercise'.

From a very young age to late teenage years she did ballroom and Latin American dancing and won 'lots of medals' so is, not surprisingly, a massive fan of Strictly Come Dancing.
