Matthew is an 18-year-old fencer from Dronfield Woodhouse who won a silver medal at the Junior Under-20s, competed at the first Under-20s World Cup in Luxembourg and is on the World Class Talent Pathway.
Matthew says: "I am currently having three fencing lessons a week working with my coach Anthony Klenczar, and sparring sessions at two different clubs, Wingerworth Fencing club and the Derbyshire Epee Academy. I also use the gym twice a week and go running when I can to improve my fitness.
"This season I am climbing my way up the rankings currently ranked at 3rd in the under 20s GB rankings. My goals for this season include qualifying for the under 20s European and World Championships I have three more internationals in the season travelling to Latvia, Finland and Switzerland to gain enough points to qualify for these championships. I am looking forward to the challenge of balancing my training with starting to study dentistry at the University of Sheffield throughout the year. My sporting ambitions are to become British number 1 and win medals at the senior European and World championships and qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics."
