Tyrell Cooper-Nelson

Tyrell is a 15-year-old from Chellaston and a member of the Derby BMX Club who is on British Cycling's Junior Academy Pathway having previously won the British Championships in the Males 16s category and finished as national number three.

Tyrell says: "I had a strong end to the season with a win in the final round of the National BMX race series to take third overall. This wasn't bad considering my late preparation for the season due to injury. I topped off the season taking the British Championship title in Derby on my home track.

"With these strong results along with some good performances at European championship level, this earned me a place on the British Cycling BMX Junior Academy. This consists of a rider specific training plan involving instructor led strength and core training sessions twice a week.

"During winter months I'll be combining this with two off track skills based sessions per week along with a track based-session midweek. Roughly every fortnight I will be travelling up to the British Cycling National Cycling Centre in Manchester for a BC coached training session. This is normally an intense indoor session on the International Supercross track and then a gym session.

"As well as competing in the 2017 National BMX race series, British Cycling are backing me to take part in a week long training camp in Zolder, Belgium. This will be followed by two long weekends away to race in the European series with rounds one and two in Zolder and rounds three and four in Holland as part of the BC Junior academy squad.

"My biggest event of the year will be racing in the European Championships in Bordeaux, France, again as part of the BC Junior squad."

Both the leisure pass and ICON bursary will be greatly received in helping me keep up my fitness and ensure I can keep on top of my bike servicing costs throughout the year.
